Intro to Drafting
Very simply - drafting is the intersection between drawing and math. It is also known as technical drawing.
It allows us to create drawings that are grounded in reality that can be used for analysis, planning, measuring, and working through conceptual ideas.
In order to create a drafted drawing we need to know two things.
The measurements or dimensions of whatever it is we’re trying to draft.
The intended scale of the drawings. You can read more about scale in our “Understanding Scale” blog post.
Once we have these two pieces of information we can create our drawing.
As a bit of general information - drafted drawings are typically done from one of two perspectives.
The most common is “Plan” - which is a top down perspective. This would be like being in a plane and looking directly down on something...kind of like Google Maps.
The other typical view is “Section / Elevation” - which is a perspective looking directly at an object. For example if you had a line of people of all different heights...a plan view would show you how much space they take up...in Section or Elevation you would be able to see the heights of each person.
For the purpose of planning competitions - “Plan” is the view that we need to be able to create and familiarize ourselves with.
